Trip Expense Splitter: log who paid, see who owes whom

In short: a free tool for splitting travel costs with friends. Log every expense someone paid for, in any currency. It converts everything to one currency and settles up with the fewest transfers (at most N−1 for N people). Share one link and everyone sees the same ledger.

How to use the trip expense splitter in three steps

  1. Add travelers and pick a settlement currency: add everyone on the trip. Most groups settle in their home currency, so paying each other back after the trip is easy.
  2. Log each expense as it happens: enter the amount, the local currency and what it was for, choose who paid, then tick who shares it. Anyone who wasn't there simply isn't ticked.
  3. Check the settlement and share the link: the results panel shows who should pay whom, and how much, in real time. Tap “Share link with the group” and drop it in your group chat so everyone can check.

How the math works: net balances and the fewest transfers

Each person's net balance = what they actually paid − their fair share. A positive balance means others owe them; a negative one means they owe others. The tool then pairs the person who owes the most with the person owed the most and settles them one by one, so N people need at most N−1 transfers instead of paying each other back expense by expense.

Example: Alex, Ben and Chloe go to Tokyo. Alex pays ¥60,000 for the hotel and Ben pays ¥15,000 for dinner. Split three ways, each person's share is ¥25,000.

TravelerPaidShareNet balance
Alex¥60,000¥25,000+¥35,000 (gets back)
Ben¥15,000¥25,000−¥10,000 (owes)
Chloe¥0¥25,000−¥25,000 (owes)

Two transfers settle everything: Chloe sends ¥25,000 to Alex and Ben sends ¥10,000 to Alex. If you settle in another currency, the tool converts the amounts at the rates you choose.

Which exchange rate should a multi-currency split use?

By default the tool loads international reference rates (mid-market), which suits groups that agree to “just use market rates”. For more precision, change them to the rate on your card statement or the rate you got when exchanging cash before the trip. Rates are saved in the share link, so every traveler sees exactly the same amounts.

Trip expense splitting FAQ

What is the fairest way to split travel costs?

The most common method is net balances: subtract what each person should pay from what they actually paid. People with a positive balance get money back, people with a negative balance pay, and the differences are settled with as few transfers as possible.

How do I split costs paid in different currencies?

Pick one settlement currency first, convert every foreign-currency expense into it at an exchange rate, then split. The tool can load reference rates, and you can replace them with the actual card or cash exchange rate you got.

Is my data uploaded to a server when I share a link?

No. The ledger is compressed into the part of the link after #, so it only lives in the link and in your browser. The website never receives or stores your expenses.

Can someone skip an expense they didn't take part in?

Yes. Every expense has its own list of people who share it, and only the people ticked split that cost evenly. For example, friends who didn't drink can skip the bar bill.

Why are there fewer transfers than I expected?

The tool doesn't settle expense by expense. It offsets everything each person paid and owes, keeps only the net balances, then matches the largest debts with the largest credits, so N people usually need at most N−1 transfers.

Can I add the trip expense splitter to my phone's home screen?

Yes. On iPhone, open this page in Safari, tap Share, then “Add to Home Screen”. On Android, open it in Chrome, tap ⋮ and choose “Add to home screen”. It then opens like an app with nothing to download, and your ledger stays saved on that phone.

Can friends who don't use the tool still see the result?

Yes. After you tap “Share link with the group”, anyone who opens the link sees the full ledger and how much each person owes, with no sign-up or install. You can also tap “Copy summary” and paste it into your group chat.

Two of us logged expenses on separate phones. Can we merge them?

Yes. Each person shares their ledger link with the other. When it is opened, the tool recognizes the same trip and merges both sets of expenses, skipping duplicates and keeping deleted items deleted. Share the link once more afterwards and everyone has the same ledger.

How do I mark who has already paid?

Tap “Mark as paid” under each transfer in the results. The tool records the repayment, recalculates the remaining transfers, and shows how many are settled and how much is left. Links and summaries you share afterwards list who has paid and who hasn't, so nobody who already paid gets chased. Payment records merge along with the ledger.

How is this different from apps like Splitwise?

Apps like Splitwise need every traveler to download and sign up, which suits ongoing shared expenses. This tool works in the browser with no account, and friends only need the link to see the same ledger, which is ideal for settling up when a single trip ends. There is no live cloud sync, but ledgers logged separately can be merged by swapping links.

Do I need to download an app or sign up?

No. It runs in any phone or computer browser. Your data is saved in your browser automatically, and the share link lets you continue editing on another device.
